Meet the owners: Marie-Louise Witmer and Hendrik Engelkes.

We are Dutch, from Amsterdam and bought the property in July 2010.

After spending several years in Westchester, New York we came back in April 2010 to Amsterdam and decided to look for a nice spot in France.

Our objective was to find a place on a 1 day driving distance, not remote in the country but preferably close to a little village where at least you could buy every day fresh croissants.

And it should be “lively” all year round, because our plan was to stay in France around 10 days each month.

We ended up in Bourgogne… Although Bourgogne is a very big region, we definitely narrowed our search to the Cote d’Or.

Via English friends we hooked up with an English realtor, who showed us lots of places and finally showed us the property in Cirey-les-Nolay.

Et voila it did hit all the boxes. Build on a hill, nice views, situated in a small hamlet close – 1 km- to a village with 3 boulangers!

The main house was in very good condition including 3 guestrooms  , nice garden with plenty of space to build a swimming pool and a second house from 1848 which had the potential to turn into a gite…. The walls and the roof were in good condition, but inside it was a complete ruin….

Although we had some idea’s how to rebuild it, we were lucky to get in touch with a young French architect, who immediately understood our thoughts and turned it in a great plan….

And then came the difficult part how to make it work….. Long story short we hired 5 local artisans, a macon, a plaquiste, a menuisier, an electricien and a plumber…. 5 independent Artisans which we brought together and explained how we want it to be realized…Quite  a challenge but it worked! We feel they did an incredible job and worked perfectly together as a team.

We hope we could welcome you as our guests and enjoy the gite and its beautiful surroundings!
